What’s new in BBIH?  

The October 2025 update to the Bibliography of British and Irish History adds over 5,000 new publications. The new update includes books, journal articles, book chapters and edited collections covering all areas of British and Irish history, from 55 BCE to the present day. This now means that BBIH contains 676,551 records. 

The October 2025 update includes:  

History titles published between 2015-2025 

4,571 new titles have been added. 

Local histories of Britain and Ireland 

4,172 publications were added including: 

  • 359 publications relating to Scottish history 
  • 162 titles about the history of Wales 
  • 2032 publications relating to the history of England 
  • 468 publications focusing on Irish history, including 83 publications focusing on Northern Ireland
Global histories of Britain and Ireland 

1,186 new records with the BBIH subject term ‘Imperial and Commonwealth’ were added including: 

  • 448 records discuss the histories of the Americas and Atlantic Ocean 
  • 229 records refer to histories of African nations

Researching digital histories in BBIH 

Over the past few months, the Bibliography’s editors and Brepols published a new online reading list focusing on digital history as a methodological approach within the history discipline. This new reading list contains 451 publications and can be found, along with all of BBIH’s online reading lists from Online reading lists from BBIH on the IHR’s website.  

The Bibliography contains more than 900 resources about digital history, including 27 new publications added in the October 2025 update. 

Researching military histories in BBIH 

The Bibliography’s editors and Brepols have also recently published a new online reading list focusing on the social and intellectual aspects of military history. This new reading list contains 320 publications and can be found, along with all of BBIH’s online reading lists from Online reading lists from BBIH on the IHR’s website.  

The Bibliography contains more than 71,000 publications related to military history. Topics range from specific British, Irish and colonial and commonwealth armed forces and the wars and battles they have been involved in, to various aspects of military affairs including the histories of defence policies and military strategies, miliary morale, and prisoners of war. The latest update to the Bibliography contains 773 new publications about military history. 

  

About the Bibliography of British and Irish History  

The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is the largest and most comprehensive guide available to what’s been written about British and Irish history, from the early 1900s to the present day. 

It’s an essential resource for research and teaching, providing up-to-date information (and links) on over 670,000 history books, articles, chapters, edited collections and theses. New records are added in three annual updates. These records are searchable by a wide range of facets including: title, author, chronology, date and form of publication, historical topic and geographical region.  

The Bibliography is a research project of the UK’s Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and our publisher Brepols.   

BBIH is a subscription service and is available remotely via university and research libraries worldwide. Individual subscriptions are also available for personal use including substantially reduced rates for:
