The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) is seeking a senior academic leader to become Professor in the History of People, Place and Community and the founding Director of a new research centre in the History of People, Place and Community.
The establishment of this new centre is part of a major transformation taking place at the IHR that will culminate in the celebration of the Institute’s centenary in 2021. You’ll find further details here on the post and how to apply (closing date, Monday 8 October).
This new research centre will draw upon the existing expertise and interests of the staff and the respective constituencies of the Centre for Metropolitan History (CMH) and the Victoria County History (VCH) Central Office and develop research, training and public engagement activities that demonstrate the scholarly value of the history of people, place and community.
The history of ‘place’ in its broadest conception has been central to the research and activities of both CMH and VCH for as long as they have been associated with the IHR, and as a discipline is embedded in the current and planned initiatives of both. This is an exciting opportunity to create a dynamic and innovative research centre and to shape the discipline more broadly by working with scholars to rethink existing methodologies.
The centre will be expected to develop a significant research portfolio, building on existing project such as the HLF funded Layers of London project, which began its 30-month delivery phase in January 2018. There will also be opportunity to contribute to and develop a new taught Masters programme, potentially in partnership with other institutions, as well as developing a creative scholarly and public events programme.
In collaboration with colleagues at IHR Digital, there will be scope for new digital projects to generate unique, wide-ranging and innovative digital history resources which go further in form and function than content currently available, and which would support the IHR’s broader digital publishing and research innovation plans.
