Spices and the spice trade are the subject of a fascinating new publication by Paul Freedman, Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination. More than just a work of food history, Freedman’s book places the subject in its broader political, economic, social and cultural contexts in what our reviewer, Roger Haden, found a ‘refreshing, compelling and convincing’ read.
